Stay Selfish, Stay Good

Ghaziabad: I was reading a newspaper (damn this PGDM and the need for general awareness), when an article on the "CSR" caught my attention. CSR, or the in-vogue Corporate Social Responsibility is basically the various small or long term activities initiated by the corporate overlords. So nowadays, everyone is jumping in the bandwagon to be called "socially responsible".

Now, I was thinking something different (of course right!). There definitely IS a selfish motif involved when a money hungry organization goes on a spending spree for someone who is essentially a non-user for their company. It’s basically projecting their organizations in good light- then they care for a sustainable future, for a better tomorrow and it’s not just good business. So by this CSR act of the organization, they are hitting two targets with the same arrow- silence the government and society, secondly (and more importantly) actually help someone.

I say, let them be selfish. Why? This same selfish motif is actually helping out a few. I was working on the project, wherein our group had to work on finding the impact of these CSR activities in India. The results were actually enlightening. The rate of health, education awareness and women empowerment is steadily increasing. Yes, it’s not where you will expect, but let’s see the finer side of things. 10 years back, there were possibly very few people actually doing something for anyone. Now, you have representatives from various organizations tracking down individuals to help them out. Good I’d say.

Which brings me to my thought for the day (you knew it was coming did’nt you??). Be selfish- as much as you can be! Give a 10 rupees note to that pesky little child who comes to you when you are waiting for the green light-just to make an impression on your girlfriend/ boyfriend sitting with you. While returning from the temple, give the “Prasad” to the old lady sitting on the temple curb- while trying to placate God. Work for that NGO- to collect a certificate to use for your CV.

Sounds very selfish? Yes it is. But these selfish motifs might just bring a miracle in someone’s life. The 10 rupee note might help someone buy his first pencil, that old might just go and buy her medicine. Be as selfish as you can be- you might become an angel for someone.

Try it. Be selfish.
